Today is the 200th anniversary of the birth of the poet Walt Whitman. He was born May 31, 1819 in West Hills, New York, and died March 26, 1892, at age 72, in Camden, New Jersey.In 1984, I moved to Philadelphia. Soon afterwards (it was near the top of my to-do list), I drove to nearby Camden, just across the Ben Franklin Bridge, to take a tour of Whitman's home. He lived in the house the last several years of his life, and died there. This is a postcard of the house, which I got either at the time of the visit, or not too long after.
